At the heart of all that we do is understanding the dynamics of the rural context and the links between poverty, livelihoods and vulnerability – in essence who are the poor, what makes them poor, what keeps them poor and how structural inequalities can be changed to facilitate change?

The importance of understanding these dynamics at the local level and ensuring that this is integrated within initiatives – be it programme design or policy interventions – cannot be underestimated.
